On Gender

A quick note about gender.

Syra Brownlock is a gender-neutral brand.

I know what it’s like to feel pigeon-holed into a type of clothing and how annoying and suffocating it can feel. All anyone ever wants to do with an hourglass figure is to stuff it into a figure-hugging dress, but sometimes I just want a huge shirt and baggy trousers and I don’t care if Joe on the street thinks I look like a barrel.

I like barrels. Without them we wouldn’t have wine.

Also, I’ve had it up to here with advice on how to look younger, thinner, ‘sexier’, or whatever the hell. I have this one life, and I deserve the freedom to wear whatever makes me happy.

So I want to break that mould of ‘this is what you should wear for your body type/age/gender/sexuality/biology/ethnicity’. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

On the other hand, tailoring and pattern-making are very specific industries that rely on biological definitions of the human body - breasts need to be fitted for specific shirts in a different way than flat chests, for example.

You may see me mention menswear or womenswear or specific measurements, but that doesn’t mean the piece determines the wearer.

Don’t make decisions on whether you can or should buy something just because of the gender of the model on the website, though.

Everything you see here can be made for every gender and body type, since it’s all made to order in each customer’s exact measurements.

You tell me how you want it to look, and how you want to feel in it, and what you want your pieces to say about you, and I’ll do everything I can to make your vision come true.

As you’ll notice, I model many of these pieces. That’s because many of the samples are made in my size, so I can test the patterns and make adjustments to the design as necessary.

But don’t let that stop you!

All you need to carry off any piece of clothing is the right attitude.

If there’s anything else I can do to support you and to make you feel fantastic in the clothes you wear, don’t even think - just drop me a line (contact form is at the top of the page, or you can find me on social media).
